The Press Council, self-regulatory body for print and online media in BiH, organizes a seminar on “Freedom of Speech and the Internet” and “Freedom of Speech and Privacy Protection”, within the Joint Project of the Council of Europe and the European Union, JUFREX – Strengthening the Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Speech in the SEE, October 25th and 26th 2018. in Sarajevo, Hotel Europa.
This is the fourth seminar organized by the Press Council in 2018 under the Council of Europe and the European Commission JUFREX Program.
Participation in the seminar was confirmed by 50 representatives of the judiciary from all over BiH (Prosecutor’s Office, Courts, HJPC), police agencies and media.
The aim of the seminar is to strengthen judicial expertise and understanding of freedom of expression on the Internet in accordance with Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as to strengthen media ethical and responsible reporting and to empower journalists to follow the ethical standards of the profession.
European and domestic legal and media experts will elaborate the protection of freedom of speech and privacy on the Internet in the light of new European laws.
The discussion will focus on:
The issues of freedom of speech in BiH, if it’s applied in accordance with democratic principles, and if it’s being misused
Is BiH society is mature enough for the openness of the internet and how to raise citizens’ awareness of the proper exercise of freedom of speech and opinion without spreading hatred rhetoric and hate speech?
How big is the discrepancy between the Law on the Protection of Personal Data and the Law on Free Access to Information, as well as how does the ever more stringent measures for the protection of personal data reflect on investigative journalism and public reporting?
At the beginning of the seminar, the “Lexicon of Judicial and Media Terms in BiH” will be introduced – a special JUFREX edition of the lexicon for journalists and representatives of the judiciary.
